Because they became
so rare, it is not exactly known whether their populations have started
to recover.
But despite their low numbers, their habitat is thought to
be quite widespread.
There are, however, a few different subspecies in different
oceans of the world.
There is a western Atlantic population around
north-eastern US, Canada and Greenland.
There is an
eastern atlantic
population between Azures in south and Iceland in north. And there are
two smaller subspecies of blue whale found in Indian Ocean.
The
so-called Antarctic Blue Whale has been spotted in southern Indian
Ocean, while pygmy blue whale has been seen in northern parts and is
believed to be quite common.
